Scorching. That's the best word to describe not only the triple-digit air temperatures but also some of the e.t.'s unleashed at the 2010 IDRC International Finals. Held on September 4, 2010 at Auto Club Dragway in Fontana, California, over 160 racers were joined by over 2,000 fans as everyone scrambled to find a patch of shade to witness the drivers turn up the heat on the track.
Several new features added to the excitement of the 2010 finale, including the Motor Mavens Drift class, featuring Formula D drift cars putting the power down in a straight line and showing the crowd that power used to go sideways can go straight just as well. Each class was sponsored, with additional categories for quickest reaction time, quickest E.T. and fastest trap. This event also saw the return of the Benjamin's Club sponsored by Motovicity Distribution, where a crisp $100 bill was awarded to the quickest car representing each of the different manufacturers. The sponsors added over $5,200 in cash payouts and $3,500 in prizes for the top racers.
A Race for the 6's
DSPORT publisher Michael Ferrara also announced a new challenge for next year's drag racing season. DSPORT Magazine has placed a $5,000 bounty for the first FWD to make back-to-back six-second passes at an IDRC event in 2011. Will it be Chris Rado? Or will it be Gary Gardella, Marty Ladwig or Ed Bergenholtz? Or will it be you? We look forward to seeing who will be the first to make FWD history and capture this prize.
The 2010 finals also featured a massive vendor showcase and parts swap meet. There were 38 vendors who set up canopies, product displays and demo vehicles along with discounted merchandise and second-hand parts for bargain hunters to sift through. Mixed into the vendor showcase was the HellaFlush/Fatlace car show, giving browsers a chance to check out some clean rides while they shop. The car show winners each received a plaque and a fresh timepiece, courtesy of Meister Watches. The U.S. Army Rock Wall Challenge presented by Exedy Clutches pitted man versus gravity in a race for a $500 Exedy gift certificate. The fastest man to scale the rock climbing wall was Nick Schultz, who took home the prize. Special thanks go out to the official energy drink of the IDRC, NOS Energy, for quenching the thirst of the attendees with cases of Smartwater and NOS. Much appreciation also goes out to all of the vendors and sponsors who came to the event and showed the kind of support that proves our industry's strength in motorsports. 2011 looks to be an even more exciting season, as the IDRC rewrites its rule book and expands the drag racing series across the nation. Go to www.importdrag.com for updates, the new rule book and schedule due for release this winter. Stay tuned.
