If you haven’t tuned into a Red Bull Global Rallycross Championship (GRC) race, you’re missing out. This series puts together a formula that’s unlike anything else in motorsports. First, the cars. 600 horsepower, 600+ lb-ft of torque, six-speed sequential gearbox, all-wheel drive, and zero-to-sixty in under two seconds. What makes these specs even more impressive is the environment that these machines are used in. Instead of taking turns around an empty road course trying to set a fast lap, GRC drivers battle door-to-door on short tracks composed of dirt, gravel and tarmac, surrounded only by walls. If the changing road…

High-powered modified Subaru engines tend to generate excessive blow-by oil and gasses. In these cases, an ordinary small catch can may quickly fill with oil and not be adequate. Like the Radium Engineering Subaru Dual Cath Can Kit, the AOS (Air Oil Separator) kit is responsible for keeping blow-by oil and other pollutants out of the intake pipe, manifold, turbocharger, and intercooler during all engine loads. The main difference is that an AOS system returns what is collected back into the oil pan so there is no servicing required. The built-in heater keep water from condensing in the AOS, making sure ONLY oil…

Moderate temperatures greeted attendees on Sunday October 23, 2016, offering ideal racing conditions as the masses made their way into the venue at Auto Club Dragway in Fontana, California. The racers set up in their pits while the InstaFame contestants filed to the end of the track to coordinate and get staged into…

The term “future-proof” is a dangerous one to throw around for any modern technology. Many mobile device manufacturers regularly push out their latest hardware while deeming the previous generation outdated. You can’t go shopping for a laptop without the expectation that there will be a new model next year that is thinner, lighter and more powerful. Even automotive technologies follow this pattern, with engine management solutions and active suspension continually proving more effective than ever before with every update. In the cockpit, the motorsports industry pushes data acquisition technologies forward, making gigantic strides in the last decade. Despite the trend…

Richard Move Aside, Front-Wheel Drive The car I wish had made it to U.S. shores would have to be Mitsubishi’s EVO IV. My first encounter with the EVO IV was during the mid-1990’s, when front-wheel drive Acuras and Hondas rose to dominance across America thanks to their high specific output engines equipped with Honda’s variable valve timing and lift system (VTEC.) While tuners and fabricators faced the challenge of figuring out how to make the B-series engines produce power reliably (which they ultimately did), the CN9A EVO IV earned high praise on the international stage for its all-wheel driveline, active…

Why should anyone care about time attack? Motorsports around the world already deliver wheel-to-wheel, on-road and off-road action with nearly every style racecar imaginable, so why bother with a motorsport that appears to many as a large-scale autocross? Although time attack competition prioritizes a single best lap time above all else, there’s much more to it than throwing parts at a car and laying down a few fun laps. At the level of the Yokohama World Time Attack Challenge, this form of racing brings out some of the world’s most skilled drivers, piloting insane builds put together by the most…
