Evasive Maneuvers: Evasive Motorsports FR-S

Bondo, Foam and Elbow Grease

evasive-frs-123-026Starting with a foundation of foam and Bondo, they worked on the body feverishly for fourteen days straight, with every member of the staff including Jason Reinholdt, Dennis Chieu, Hugh Le, Daryl Lai, Randy Lew and Jonathan Chou contributing to the hours of shaping and forming of each panel. Once finished, Evasive turned to Downforce USA for assistance with the molds. Three days later, the finished panels were ready to be mounted to the body. After installing the overfenders and side skirts, the stock front bumper received a Tamon Design lip spoiler before a custom carbon-fiber splitter was made to complete the front end aero. Moving to the back, the rear bumper was cut to accommodate an adjustable diffuser designed to smooth the turbulent airflow coming from under the chassis. For additional down force, a custom Voltex Type-7 wing mounted through the trunk lid to the chassis. This LeMans-inspired setup generates less turbulence under the wing compared to conventional designs. The chassis then took a trip to TintFactory to receive a 3M vinyl wrap and graphics package.

Filling Fenders

evasive-frs-123-025The wider fenders needed to be filled, and a proper offset was a must. Since the FR-S came with the unpopular 5x100mm bolt pattern, Project Kics conversion spacers enabled the team to choose from a broad variety of 5×114.3mm bolt patterned wheels instead. They chose the ever-popular Volk Racing TE37 wheels in an 18×10-inch +20 offset configuration at all four corners. The TE37s were mounted with Maxxis RC-1 DOT R-compound tires in a 275/35R18 offering. KW Suspension Motorsports 3-way coilover dampers suspend the chassis over the Maxxis rubber while Project Mu 4- piston calipers up front and 2-piston calipers at the rear make the tires bite into the tarmac during braking.

SEMA 2012 and Beyond

evasive-frs-123-029Evasive Motorsports finished just in time for SEMA, proudly displaying its creation in the Scion booth. Although it was just one in over 50 FR-S to be displayed at the show, it was one of the most popular and most talked about throughout the week. Just days after the show, final preparations were made as Evasive took the car to Buttonwillow Raceway to compete at the Global Time Attack finals on November 7, 2012. There, with driver Robert Walker behind the wheel, the Evasive Motorsports FR-S made its competition debut, finishing third in its class with a lap time of 1 minute 59.2 seconds. Kwan concluded, “The Global Time Attack event provided us with valuable data for refining the build. We now have a few months to further develop the chassis and build the engine to produce more power for Pikes Peak. We will likely switch to a MoTeC engine management system and retune the built engine on E85 fuel.” With a 500-horsepower target, expect the Evasive Motorsports FR-S to be coming ’round the mountain in record time. Stay tuned.
