Fabrication Frenzy
With a solid foundation in place, attention shifted to power production. One way to extract more power is to increase boost. However, to do so safely requires a reduction of intake air temperatures. Unfortunately, the rules do not allow the use of highly efficient air-to-water intercoolers as a means of heat exchange. Therefore, it would have to be air- to-air. With this in mind, they chose a Full Race manifold that positions a Precision Turbo & Engine 7280 turbocharger in the front bumper. This forces cool ambient air directly into the compressor. It also puts the compressor discharge in the perfect position to feed directly into the end tank of a Dynamic Performance custom intercooler. The massive 6- inch thick intercooler makes the connection to the Gato Performance intake manifold by way of custom aluminum piping. This design employs minimal piping for efficient forced induction delivery.
Balancing Boost With Juice
Putting the right hardware together solved one part of the power-making puzzle. Fuel selection and delivery were the next pieces to address. Aiming for 1,000 horsepower levels at over 50 psi boost pressure would require a robust fuel delivery system for safe operation. A Weldon 2345-a fuel pump was selected to draw E85 from an FCS fuel cell, moving the mixture toward the engine. The reinforced fuel delivery supplies the Gato Performance fuel rail feeding eight Fuel Injector Clinic 2,150 cc/min injectors. The injectors mount neatly to dual injector bosses at each port, ensuring proper fuel delivery. With the hardware in place, they called upon Medina’s expertise to refine the fuel and ignition tables of an AEM EMS Series 2 ECU. Medina strapped the chassis to a Dynojet dynamometer, ramped up the boost and adjusted the air/fuel mixture. At 45 psi boost pressure, the Civic put down an incredible 983 horsepower and 545 lb-ft torque to the rollers.
Back For Battle
Spending the better part of 2012 redesigning the engine setup, extracting more power, and refining the chassis have poised Blanco and Jimenez to improve their already scorching personal best times and traps down the 1,320. They commented, “We built this car to not only showcase what can be done, but also to show our customers that power and performance can be attained with off-the-shelf parts. Even the parts we fabricated for this setup will serve as prototypes for production pieces we will offer as Dynamic Performance parts. The bottom line is that we’re passionate about racing and performance. Our customers enjoy the benefits of our racing and development program and can build their own racecars without being intimidated by custom parts.”
