Fuel, Spark and Control
To produce high power reliably, a high-volume of fuel needs to be delivered. This fuel system must also be impervious to fuel starvation to avoid an engine- destroying lean condition. BDM dropped a Walbro 255-lph fuel pump into the G35’s factory fuel tank that supplies fuel to a custom surge tank. This tank maintains a constant one gallon fuel supply for two additional in-line fuel pumps feeding six 1,000 cc/min injectors with Sunoco 116-octane race fuel. A custom fuel return system plumbs into the fuel rail in order for the injectors to maintain a consistent differential pressure as boost pressure builds.
With a DTA P8 Pro engine management system dialed in to command fuel delivery and ignition spark timing, the Infiniti spun the rollers of a Dynojet dynamometer to the tune of 730 horsepower at the wheels. Once John experienced this amount of power on the street, he realized 1,000-horsepower was far more than he needed for his street car.
DEI CRYO2
While front-mount intercoolers offer the greatest cooling efficiency over top- or side-mount cores, they are still subject to heat soak. Water spray or nitrous oxide is often used to reduce an intercooler’s core temperature. Similarly, DEI’s CryO2 System utilizes the endothermic reaction of compressed carbon dioxide expanding out of a sprayer bar to extract heat from the intercooler’s core. The result is cooler intake air charge temperatures needed for higher horsepower production with less chance of detonation.
Focusing Energy
Tripling the engine’s power output greatly exceeded the capabilities of the factory drivetrain. An OS Giken twin-disc clutch increased the reliability of power transfer from the engine to the factory 6-speed gearbox. A Carbonetic LSD distributes power evenly to DriveShaft Shop high-strength axles under load. However, the 1.5-way differential allows the axles to be unlocked half-way when no power is being applied from the engine allowing the rear to rotate more easily through sharp turns.
Suspended Animation
In order to provide control over the massive power, suspension-specialist Robert Fuller at RobiSpec enhanced the coupe’s suspension package. KW Variant 3 coilovers lower the G’s chassis and center of gravity over a widened wheel and tire package. A side-effect of lowering most cars is the change of suspension geometry. Even with a professional alignment service, the amount of camber available from the stock linkage limits the effective contact patch of the tire. To combat this, Cusco upper control arms provide a wider range of camber, allowing proper alignment settings and improved tire contact patch.
Head Turner
When sitting in the car at a stop, the quiet exhaust and leather interior fools passengers into thinking that this G35 is a mild-mannered show car. When the throttle is smashed, the car roars to life fusing occupants to their seats. In setting some lofty goals, this G35 project developed some unique solutions to common problems plaguing high-power street cars. While twin-turbocharging a car is a challenge in its own, developing innovative technology catering to high-powered daily-driver aspirations certainly deserves a tip of the hat.
Inside the cab, one is bathed in the lights from a multitude of displays and gauges. Both driver and passenger A- pillars host an array of DEFI gauges and there’s also a DEFI heads-up display projected onto the windshield.
