Weight-loss For Better Balance
Continuing to work around weight reduction, balance and distribution, a cantilever suspension from open-wheel racing technology replaces the factory suspension inside the wheel wells. At the hubs, Endless forged mono-block brake calipers and WedsSport magnesium-alloy TC105N wheels take their place under each flared fender. Reducing unsprung mass and focusing the weight of the dampers and linkage to the centerline of the chassis dramatically improves handling and responsiveness. Sprung weight tends to hurt response and can contribute to undesirable weight shift through the turns. Extensive use of carbon-fiber in the cabin and on the exterior of the IS350 helps to reduce sprung weight. Compared to the weight of a production IS350 (3,527 lb or 1,600 kg), this racecar hits the pavement with nearly 900-pounds less weight (2,640 lb or 1,200 kg).
Change Is Good
Extensive use of carbon-fiber materials helped to keep the total weight of the IS350 down while improving the aerodynamics of the exterior. Changes implemented throughout the season contributed to improved performance at various tracks. From small changes like vertical fins on the lip spoiler to reshaping the front and rear fender flares, the team spared no expense in its quest for every point possible. Masataka Bandoh comments, “Some minor changes were made in the engine bay for round seven and a third damper was installed for round eight. We kept our focus on the #7 car, our closest rival. Whenever the M7/RE Amemiya team made a change, we would also make adjustments to stay very close. What separates champions from the pack is that they aren’t afraid to make changes to the machine or to their strategy when necessary.”
The Crown Captured
When the dust settled at the end of the 2009 season, Racing Project Bandoh and WedsSport emerged victorious, earning the most driver points (85) as well as team points (112). Finishing every race along with four top-three finishes contributed to the points total and the 2009 crown. Orido comments, “Had we lost the opening race, I think the season might have turned out differently. In the finals, #11 and #43 crashed and #7 was delayed in the pits. Thinking about it now, our entire year was supported by luck.” Kataoka adds, “There have been many ups and downs this season, but we remained focused to the very last race. I was a little nervous joining a new team, but they made me feel at home from the start. It was the support I needed to do my best.” Racing Project Bandoh returned to Super GT for 2010 with Orido and Kataoka once again. In the first race of the season at Suzuka Circuit, the team finished in third place. But their overall time improved by one minute, 34 seconds compared to last year. As 2010 progresses, watch as this IS350 charges for the top of the podium once again.
