8 Second Honda Civic Hatchback

BELIEF IN THE B

feature-mfactory-civic-dragger-149-003With well over a decade of development in place, choosing Honda’s venerable B-Series engine as the foundation of the driveline made sense to Conley. The block visited Southern California, where Golden Eagle Mfg. sleeved the block before returning it to SpeedFactory in Seattle. Once there, a set of 84mm Arias pistons filled the bores. BME aluminum rods were fitted to make the connection between the pistons and a custom 89mm crankshaft, increasing the engine’s displacement to 1,973cc. During the engine build, Luke from 4 Piston Racing ported and polished the cylinder head. He also upgraded the valvetrain with Ferrea valves and Skunk2 springs and retainers. The cylinder head was then reunited with the block. To ensure a proper seal, ARP L19 head studs crushed a JE Pistons head gasket between the head and block.

EXTRACTING 1K PLUS

feature-mfactory-civic-dragger-149-004Extracting more than 1,000 horsepower from the two-liter engine requires forced induction and lots of fuel. To this end, a SpeedFactory custom manifold channels the exhaust gasses through the turbine of a Precision Turbo & Engine PT7285 turbocharger. The 72mm inducer inlet pokes out through the bumper to receive cool and unobstructed airflow. The compressor discharge feeds directly into the custom end tank of a Garrett intercooler core that pressurizes a Skunk2 Ultra Series intake manifold. As the intake charge distributes to the individual runners, eight GRAMS 2,200 cc/min injectors spray FTW Purple Race Fuel into the cylinders. With a MoTeC M800 engine management system regulating the fuel delivery and spark timing, James Kempf at SpeedFactory made adjustments to the tables as the boost was set to its peak pressure of 50 psi. Once optimized, the Civic spun the rollers of a Dynojet dynamometer to the tune of 1,056 horsepower and 660 lb-ft torque.
