UNDER INCREASED BOOST AND CYLINDER PRESSURES, EVEN THE SLIGHTEST CYLINDER LEAN condition can cause a melted hole in any factory piston. To help alleviate this stress, MAHLE developed its PowerPak Plus pistons for the Ford EcoBoost 2.0-liter. These pistons are machined from MAHLE M142 alloy, slipper skirt forgings and feature 3D-shaped crowns specific to the needs of EcoBoost combustion chambers. The pistons first undergo a triple-coating with a phosphate dry film to protect the pin bores from galling followed by application of MAHLE’s proprietary anti-friction Grafal® which is applied to the skirts. To withstand the higher cylinder temperatures and pressures associated with boosted, direct injection applications, the top ring grooves are hard anodized to protect against micro welding. In addition, these top ring lands feature alloy material delivering added strength.
