617 WHP 350Z Gets Big-Blocked and Boosted

MIXED FEEDS

121-001-Feat-350Z-DynoMalone and Intec Racing utilized dual GTM intakes to satiate the voluminous intake requirements of the two turbochargers and large-displacement engine. A GTM front-mounted intercooler lowers intake charge-air temperatures before feeding it into the stock intake manifold. Since Malone intended the Z to run 93-octane pump gas for street duties and C16 leaded racing fuel for track excursions, an extravagant ultra-highvolume fuel delivery system was not required. Instead, a sextet of Injector Dynamics ID1000 injectors supplied by a custom CJM Walbro-based dualpump system comprises the extent of the fuel supply solution. Engine management duties belong to a custom configuration involving a Haltech Platinum Pro standalone unit wired as a piggyback to the factory ECU. The Platinum Pro only modifies fuel and ignition maps while UpRev’s Osiris system controls the remainder of the system. Under the mixed control of both engine management systems, the 4.1-liter boost VQ delivers 617 wheel-horsepower and 636 lb-ft torque at 28psi of boost pressure.

STOP N’ GO

Malone knew that the tremendous increase in power would make short work of the factory clutch or low-quality aftermarket clutches. To avoid this issue, he installed an OS Giken Triple-plate clutch system to provide the torque-capacity required by the boosted “big-block” Z. A KAAZ 2-way limited-slip differential replaces the factory unit to provide grip in accelerating and decelerating instances. The LSD turns DSS Level 2 axles at the rear. Malone upgraded the 350Z with Stoptech 355mm 6-piston and 4-piston brakes in the front and rear, respectively.

FUNCTIONABLE FASHION

Morris Malone's 350Z Volk WheelAfter the year-and-a-half-long build process was complete, Malone admits the high point of the project thus far was hearing the 4.1-liter monster gurgling through massive GTM downpipes and a titanium GReddy exhaust system for the first time. “I wanted to build something that scared me and got my adrenaline going every time I took it out,” he explains. To deal with all the attention he expected to receive, Malone added a series of JP Type N aero pieces and performed custom work to streamline the Z33’s bodylines. A set of staggered 19-inch TE37SL wheels just about complete the performance and function aspects of Malone’s build. The last esoteric clue to the performance within lies in Malone’s tire choices; 255/35R19 BF Goodrich T/A KDW 300-treadwear tires on the front and massive 295/30R19 Toyo R888 100-treadwear tires at the rear.

BACK IN BLACK

After a mishap with factory head gaskets shortly after the VQ fired back to life, Malone swapped in a pair of Cosworth MLS head gaskets to better handle the tremendous cylinder pressures produced. The car has since run without incident. While Malone states the performance aspect of the build is complete and that only appearance modifications remain, the young, restless and determined can’t be trusted to leave well-enough alone. We expect Malone to start mashing ideas together again to reach another as-of-yet undetermined goal. After all, as he is quick to admit, “half the fun is the build itself.” Stay tuned.
