The turbochargers selected to set the record were a pair of HKS GT3540 ball- bearing turbochargers. To keep the boost pressure where it needs to be, a pair of HKS racing wastegates are under the single throttle body. Directing the hot exhaust gases out of the head, VeilSide crafted a set of tubular exhaust manifolds using 45mm (1.75-inch) stainless-steel tubing. Each of the manifolds is fed by three cylinders and each feeds a turbo and wastegate. Once the exhaust has turned the turbine wheels the spent flow is then channeled through a pair of 80mm exhaust pipes.

To keep the boost pressure where it needs to be, a pair of HKS racing wastegates are under the control of an HKS EVC Pro. Once the compressed air exits the turbos, the flow is directed through the massive VeilSide racing intercooler.
Meeting the fueling demands, four Bosch pumps supply the fuel to six 1800 cc/minute injectors. These injectors along with the factory ignition system take cues from the HKS Fcon-V Pro, plug-and-play, stand-alone engine management system.
From the Flywheel to the Tires
In many respects, the clutch is the most abused component on a quarter-mile contender. To regulate 850 ft-lbs of torque used to motivate the 2500-plus pounds of mass, an OS Giken quad-disk setup is utilized. The four 215mm metallic clutch disks transfer the power into the HKS 5- speed air-shifted sequential transmission. Once the power is through the transmission, a VeilSide carbon-fiber driveshaft carries the power to the rear ATS differential. The front differential is fed by the factory driveshaft. From the differentials, power is then transferred to the wheels by HKS heavy-duty axels.
In radial-tire trim, the VeilSide R-1 relies on 275/40ZR17 Nitto NT-555R Drag Radial tires. To date, the car’s best performance on these tires has been an 8.612-second blast that eclipsed at over 172 mph.
Gunning for the 7s
Just before this issue went to press, the VeilSide R-1 came out to the biggest race of the year on the West Coast (the IDRC International Finals). Anxious to break into the 7s with this vehicle, the team opted for a set of four Goodyear 26x9x15 slicks mounted on 15×9 Volk Racing TE37 forged racing wheels. These tires and the awesome bite of the well- prepped track had the VeilSide R-1 experiencing a massive starting-line bog. Playing with the rev limiter and launch rpm the team continually improved the elapsed times. After running an 8.450 at 168mph, the team finally had all the data to get the GT-R to launch properly. With the Skyline ready to rock, it rolled up to the line. When the tree flashed green, the GT-R took off to an all-time-record-60-foot time. Grabbing Second, the R-1 was on track to potentially break into the 7s. In an instant it was time to shift into Third, but there was a problem. A member of the crew had forgotten to turn on the air bottle to the air shifter. The transmission was severely damaged from this mishap. Without a spare, the crew was done for the day. Now, the R-1 is set to return to the land of the rising sun. We’ll keep a close eye and a close ear to our friends at VeilSide as they help us with our own Project GT-R.
